Details About the Upcoming Star Trek Sequel

|

Fans are all over the various possibilities for the upcoming Star Trek sequel. Rumors are flying, and the design team has shared some information about their thinking.

While fans are wondering if Khan is going to make an appearance in the Star Trek sequel planned to be released on June 29, 2012, the design team has been brainstorming ideas to take the franchise further down its new path. They’d like to re-energize it much like the Batman franchise did with Dark Knight.

Popular Star Trek Sequel Ideas

Obviously the Khan idea has taken off pretty strong, and some fans would really like to see that rematch. But producers are not interested as much there, because they felt that nobody could carry off Khan like Ricardo Montalban.

Others are interested in a cameo appearance by Admiral Archer, played on Star Trek: Enterprise by Scott Bakula. Since he was mentioned by Scotty in the first movie when Scotty “lost” Archer’s beagle, fans would really like to see Archer slip into the Star Trek sequel as a cameo appearance. Many are hoping to see more of Bruce Greenwood as Captain Pike in this and other Star Trek sequel movies. He has supposedly created a strong backstory and potential for the character and Abrams appears interested in using it.

A few fans are interested in a cameo of an aged Captain Kirk, but others are strongly opposed to seeing him “invade” the new territory. They feel that his death in the previous sequences would confuse a good storyline.

Should the Star Trek Sequel Fight a Bad Guy … Or Head Off Exploring?

Most are saying both, although I think people are leaning towards exploration and adventures. The Bad Guy scenario just leaves too much temptation to bring in echoes of the previous “baddies” and that might ruin things.

In fact, according to “Devin’s Advocate” there are several things Trek should avoid:

  1. Klingons
  2. Khan
  3. Simon Pegg’s “Bumpy Ewok” – Scotty doesn’t need another Star Wars goofball, and neither does Simon Pegg
  4. Trekking into the original canon – take a chance and go somewhere nobody has gone before…

Star Trek Sequel Thoughts

Likely Positive Directions

Two solid elements that the franchise wants to pursue are the mainstreaming of the plot and the further development of the main cast. They feel that the 2009 movie did a great job of making Star Trek appeal to an audience of more than just die-hard Trek fans and they want to continue that process of making it available and interesting to a wider fan base. They are also planning considerably more character development, since they had little time for that beyond Kirk and Spock in the first movie.

So, if you’re thinking Star Trek Sequel again already, then maybe it’s time for another Star Trek party so you can dress up in your favorite Mr. Spock costume for Star Trek Sequel brainstorming and prepare for the 2012 Star Trek sequel.
